With all of us stuck inside during the winter months, a lot of icky germs and stale air gets circulated, wrecking havoc on our hair, skin, nose, and throat.  Use this list of best indoor plants to clean the air in your home.


These plants are great for your home or office to help you through the winter.

BONUS - Areca Palm

The Areca Palm also emits huge amounts of water vapor which is much needed in the winter months with all the dry air.

Areca Palm – known to remove more toluene and xylene than any other indoor plants.  Toluene is found in our everyday items we use like, nail polish remover, glues, and white-out.  While xylene is a solvent used in industries like printing, rubber, and leather.  Both chemicals are extremely hazardous to your health.

» Lady Palm – this plant grows slowly but can reach 14ft in height, giving you a large plant to help clean the air.
» Bamboo Palm – does well removing formaldehyde from the air. Also know to remove benzene (used in dyes, lubricants, rubbers, and detergents) and trichloroethylene (an industrial solvent).
» Rubber Plant – another plant that does very well removing formaldehyde from the air.
» Dracaena “Janet Craig” – this is one of the best plants for removing trichloroethylene from the air and also rated as one of the easiest to grow.


Some of these best indoor plants help you and your home in multiple ways.

» Philodendron – being one that is easy to grow, it does come in different varieties. The varieties that tested highest in air purifying are: Red Emerald, the Lacy Tree, the Heart-Leaf, and the Elephant Ear.
» Dwarf Date Palm – this plant ranks high across the board for detoxifying the air, but did especially well at removing xylene (common solvent ingredient).
» Ficus Alii – known for resisting most insects, it is also highly effective in purifying chemical vapors from indoor air. 


» Boston Fern – this plant ranked the highest in removing formaldehyde. Formaldehyde is a common household chemical, showing up in plastic garbage bags, paper towels, facial tissue, floor coverings and adhesives.
» Peace Lily – these wonderful plants are great for removing alcohols, acetone, trichloroethylene, benzene, and formaldehyde. It is also does well as a humidifier and a purifier.
